About this course
Educational psychology is the application of psychological knowledge to the understanding of how children learn, develop, and sometimes struggle within educational systems. It draws on developmental psychology, cognitive science, social psychology, and educational theory to examine the factors that affect children's learning, including individual differences, social and cultural context, classroom dynamics, and the design of learning environments. The discipline sits at the intersection of psychology and education and is of direct relevance to practice in schools, special education, child development services, and educational policy. At Manchester Metropolitan University, you will study educational psychology over three years full-time, developing a grounding in the psychological theories and empirical research that underpin understanding of how children learn and develop. You will examine cognitive, social, and emotional development, the psychology of learning and motivation, special educational needs, educational assessment, and the ways in which schools and educational systems can better support all children, particularly those who face barriers to learning. You will also develop skills in psychological research methods and in interpreting and applying evidence from the field. The typical entry tariff is 120 UCAS points. This degree provides a strong foundation for those who want to pursue a career as a chartered educational psychologist, a goal that requires further postgraduate training at doctoral level. More broadly, graduates work in schools, local authority educational psychology services, educational research, special educational needs provision, and roles in charities and NGOs concerned with children's education and wellbeing. Teaching is also a common path, and the degree can support progression into postgraduate teacher training. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in educational psychology, developmental psychology, or education.
