About this course
Education is one of the most socially significant fields of study available at university level, addressing questions about how people learn, how knowledge is transmitted and transformed across generations, and how educational systems shape the opportunities and life chances of individuals and communities. Understanding education means engaging with psychology, sociology, philosophy, history and policy, and developing the kind of reflective, analytical thinking that both researchers and practitioners in the field need. At Edge Hill University, this four-year programme in Education includes a foundation year, which provides a structured transition into degree-level study for students who benefit from additional academic preparation before entering the full honours curriculum. The foundation year is designed to develop key transferable skills alongside subject knowledge drawn from education and related disciplines, preparing you for the intellectual demands of the degree that follows. You will develop your understanding of educational theory, child development, curriculum and pedagogy, educational policy, and the social and cultural contexts in which learning takes place. Edge Hill has a long tradition as a provider of teacher education and educational research, and the programme draws on that institutional expertise while also preparing graduates for a wide range of careers beyond the classroom. Graduates of Education degrees go on to work in teaching (following further professional training via a PGCE or School Direct route), early years and childcare, youth work, educational psychology, learning support, policy, research, and a range of roles in the public and voluntary sectors where an understanding of learning and human development is relevant. The analytical and communication skills the degree develops are broadly transferable, and many graduates also pursue postgraduate study in education, psychology, social work, or related fields.
