BA Education Studies (Youth and Community Work)
About this course
Education studies with youth and community work combines academic study of education as a social institution with practical, professionally recognised training for working with young people in non-formal and informal settings. Where school-focused education studies asks how formal learning systems are organised and how they might be improved, youth and community work addresses the spaces outside the classroom where much of the most important learning in young people's lives takes place: community centres, youth clubs, street-level outreach, alternative education projects, and youth justice settings. This three-year full-time degree at the University of Hull allows you to develop both a critical scholarly understanding of education and youth experience and the nationally recognised Joint Negotiating Committee professional qualification in youth work. You will engage with theories of youth and community development, social pedagogy, applied professional ethics, participation and engagement, and the policy landscape that shapes services for young people. Professional practice placements in diverse settings are woven into the programme, allowing you to apply your learning in real working environments and to build the reflective practice skills that mark out effective youth workers. The JNC qualification means that, upon successful completion, you will meet the recognised standard for professional youth work practice in the UK. A typical entry tariff of 120 UCAS points reflects an accessible but vocationally purposeful admissions standard. Graduates from youth and community work programmes move into careers in youth work and youth justice, community development, schools and alternative education, social care, charitable and voluntary sector organisations, public health, and policy roles focused on young people. Many continue to postgraduate study in education, social work, community development, or related fields.
