BA Education, Society and Culture
About this course
Education, society, and culture is an interdisciplinary field that approaches education not simply as a practical matter of teaching and learning, but as a social, cultural, and political phenomenon. It asks why education systems are structured the way they are, whose interests they serve, how they reproduce or challenge inequality, and how ideas about learning, childhood, knowledge, and development have changed over time. Drawing on sociology, cultural studies, history, philosophy, and policy analysis, the discipline offers a critical lens on some of the most consequential institutions in contemporary life. At University College London, one of the world's leading research universities, this three-year full-time degree is taught within a department with exceptional expertise in education research and policy. You will encounter scholarship of international standing and be encouraged to engage critically with the debates that animate the field. You will study the sociology of education, including theories of inequality, race, class, and gender in educational contexts; the history of education and educational ideas; educational policy and its social effects; curriculum theory; and the relationships between formal education and broader cultural change. Research methods, both qualitative and quantitative, are developed as a core component of the programme. The analytical skills the degree develops are demanding and genuinely transferable. You learn to read evidence critically, to construct arguments that take complexity seriously, and to write in ways that are precise and persuasive. These abilities are valued in education and far beyond it, in policy, journalism, research, advocacy, and any context where careful thinking about social institutions matters. Graduates in education, society, and culture go on to careers in educational research and policy, teaching at primary and secondary level via postgraduate teacher training, school leadership, educational consultancy, the charitable sector, journalism, and roles in public-sector organisations concerned with social inequality and welfare. Postgraduate study in education, sociology, cultural studies, policy, or social research is a well-trodden route for those who want to deepen their analysis or pursue academic careers. UCL's own Institute of Education, one of the world's most respected in the field, is a natural destination for graduates who choose to continue studying.
