BA Education, Inclusion and Special Educational Needs
About this course
Education, inclusion, and special educational needs is a degree that examines how educational systems can and should respond to the full diversity of learners, with a particular focus on those whose needs are not always well served by mainstream provision. Special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) is both a legal framework and a field of professional practice, asking how schools, colleges, and other educational settings can provide appropriate support for learners with a wide range of conditions including autism, dyslexia, ADHD, physical disabilities, and language and communication difficulties. Inclusion as a principle goes further, challenging the educational system to value and accommodate difference rather than treating it as a problem to be managed. At the University of Gloucestershire, this three-year, full-time degree develops your understanding of educational theory, policy, and practice alongside specialist knowledge of inclusive education and SEND. You will have opportunities to gain real-world professional experience through practice modules and work-based learning in schools, early years settings, colleges, community organisations, and other educational contexts. That combination of academic analysis and practical experience is central to the programme, ensuring that your understanding of inclusion is grounded in the realities of educational settings rather than purely theoretical. Graduates from education, inclusion, and SEND programmes work as teaching assistants and specialist support workers in schools and colleges, in local authority SEND teams, in educational psychology services, in parent partnership organisations, and in policy and advocacy roles. Many graduates go on to further training, including postgraduate qualifications in teaching (PGCE), educational psychology, or specialist SEND roles. The degree also provides a strong foundation for roles in social work, speech and language therapy, and occupational therapy that intersect with educational settings.
