BA Education and Music (With Foundation Year)
About this course
Education and music is a degree that brings together two disciplines that each address fundamental human capacities, the capacity to learn and be taught, and the capacity to make and respond to music. Education as a field of study examines how learning happens, how educational systems are organised, and what personal, social, cultural and political forces shape the experience of schooling in the UK and around the world. Music develops your understanding and practice of musical performance, composition and analysis, engaging with the history and theory of music alongside your own creative development. At Liverpool Hope, this four-year full-time programme opens with a foundation year, giving you a structured academic entry into the degree. Liverpool's extraordinary musical heritage gives the study of music a particular resonance, and the education studies component benefits from a department committed to understanding learning in both UK and global contexts. The programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad and a work placement, giving you substantial professional and international experience alongside your academic development. The year abroad and work placement are particularly valuable for a combined degree that is relevant to education and music contexts in different countries and cultures. You will develop your musical skills and critical engagement alongside your understanding of educational theory, research and policy, graduating with expertise that is relevant across a range of professional contexts in teaching, music education, arts education and beyond. Graduates move into music education, primary and secondary teaching, instrumental tuition, community music, arts management, educational policy and research. Many graduates pursue teacher training, either through a PGCE or early career teaching routes, with a specialism in music. Further study in music, education or music education is a natural option.
