BA Education and French
About this course
Education and French is a combination that prepares you both to teach and to communicate across cultural and linguistic boundaries. French is a major international language spoken as a first language by over 100 million people and as a second language by many millions more, spanning Europe, sub-Saharan Africa, North Africa, the Caribbean and Polynesia. For anyone who wants to teach modern languages in schools, a high level of French proficiency alongside a thorough grounding in educational theory and practice is the ideal preparation. At the University of Strathclyde, the four-year full-time degree develops your French language skills to a high level alongside rigorous study of education as a discipline. You will study the theory of learning and teaching, child development, curriculum design, educational policy and the professional skills required for effective teaching. The French component develops your language proficiency and your understanding of Francophone culture, literature and society. The combination is specifically designed as preparation for a career in education, and the degree leads directly to teaching qualification in Scotland. Strathclyde's Glasgow location gives access to the rich multicultural school environment of one of Scotland's largest cities, and the education department's strong relationships with local schools support the professional elements of the degree. Graduates work as French teachers in Scottish secondary schools, with the Teaching Qualification in Secondary Education providing the professional credential needed for the profession. Many develop additional language capabilities or broaden into curriculum leadership and school management over their careers. International teaching roles are also accessible for those who want to work abroad.
