About this course

Economics and business and management is a combination that brings together two complementary ways of understanding how organisations and markets function, developing graduates who can think both analytically and practically about the economic and commercial forces that shape modern life. Economics provides the theoretical tools for understanding how individuals, firms, and governments make decisions under conditions of scarcity, how markets allocate resources, and how macroeconomic forces affect prosperity and welfare. Business and management adds a practical and applied dimension, examining how organisations are structured, led, and developed in real commercial and institutional contexts. At the University of Glasgow this four-year full-time programme develops depth in both fields within the breadth of a Scottish MA degree. You will study how individuals and society make choices about how scarce resources are used, what products are produced, and who gets to consume them, alongside the theory and practice of management, strategy, marketing, finance, and organisational behaviour. A year abroad is incorporated into the programme, giving you the chance to study at a partner institution in another country and to develop an international perspective on both economics and business. Graduates from economics and business and management go on to careers in management, consultancy, financial services, economic analysis, policy, marketing, and a wide range of other organisations where the combination of economic reasoning and business understanding is directly applicable. The quantitative skills developed through economics are particularly valued in finance, data analytics, and market research, while the management component provides a practical foundation for leadership and operational roles. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in economics, business, or public policy, or pursue professional qualifications in finance, accounting, or management.
