BA Economics
About this course
Economics is the study of how individuals, organisations, and societies make decisions under conditions of scarcity and uncertainty. It provides analytical tools for understanding everything from the choices a household makes about spending and saving to the behaviour of global financial markets, the effects of government policy, and the long-run forces driving growth and inequality. The discipline combines the rigour of formal modelling and mathematical analysis with the ambition of addressing some of the most important questions facing contemporary societies. At Strathclyde, this four-year BA Hons degree provides a structured and cumulative training in economic thinking, beginning with the core principles of microeconomics and macroeconomics and building towards more advanced topics in economic analysis, econometrics, and applied economics. You will develop quantitative skills alongside conceptual understanding, learning to use data and formal models to analyse real economic problems rather than simply describing them. The degree includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study at a partner institution overseas and to extend your economic education in an international context. Strathclyde's approach to economics is engaged and applied, oriented towards understanding how economic analysis can inform policy and practice in a rapidly changing world. Economics graduates consistently rank among the most employable across all degree subjects, and the range of careers open to them reflects the breadth of the discipline's relevance. Finance, banking, economic consultancy, and government economic service are common destinations, as are roles in data analysis, international development, business strategy, and public policy. The quantitative and analytical skills developed in an economics degree are also valued in industries well beyond the conventional economic sphere. Many graduates pursue postgraduate study in economics, econometrics, public policy, finance, or related fields, extending their expertise into specialist professional or research careers.
