BSc Economics
About this course
Economics is the study of how individuals, organisations and societies make decisions about the allocation of scarce resources. It is a discipline that combines powerful theoretical models with rigorous empirical methods, and it addresses questions that range from how a household manages its budget to how governments respond to financial crises, how trade shapes the prosperity of nations and how markets might be designed to tackle climate change. The insight that economic analysis provides into human behaviour, institutional design and the unintended consequences of policies makes it one of the most influential of the social sciences. At the University of Westminster, this full-time three-year programme includes a sandwich placement year, a year abroad and work placement opportunities, ensuring that your academic learning is complemented by substantial professional and international experience. You will study microeconomics and macroeconomics, econometrics and statistical methods, and apply these tools to contemporary policy questions and real-world challenges. The programme encourages you to engage with the big questions that economics illuminates, from managing financial instability and tackling poverty to understanding the economics of environmental transition and the implications of trade and globalisation. Economics graduates are consistently among the most highly sought after in the graduate market. Finance, banking and investment management are major destinations, as are roles in economic consultancy, the civil service and government economic service, international organisations, development finance and think tanks. Many economics graduates also move into business analysis, marketing analytics, data science and management, where their quantitative and analytical skills are directly applicable. Further study at masters or doctoral level in economics, finance, public policy or development economics provides a route into specialist roles in research, policy and academia.
