BA Economics
About this course
Economics at Manchester is offered as an interdisciplinary BA(Econ) that allows you to specialise in economics alongside another social science, choosing from philosophy, politics, sociology and other complementary fields. This structure reflects the belief that economics is most powerful when studied in conjunction with the disciplines that engage with the social and political worlds in which economic decisions are made and their consequences felt. It produces graduates with both rigorous economic training and the broader social science perspective that many careers and postgraduate programmes increasingly demand. At the University of Manchester this three-year, full-time programme gives you a thorough grounding in micro and macroeconomic theory, quantitative methods and econometrics, alongside units in your chosen complementary field. Whether you choose politics, philosophy, sociology or another social science, you will develop the analytical tools of that discipline alongside your economics training, building a genuinely interdisciplinary academic profile. Manchester's economics department has a strong research culture and its social science faculties provide equally distinguished teaching in the complementary subjects, ensuring that both sides of the combination are taken seriously. Economics graduates are among the most versatile and sought-after in any graduate labour market. Careers span financial services, economic and management consultancy, government economic departments, central banking, international organisations, data science and analytics, technology companies and public policy roles. The social science element opens additional doors in policy research, journalism, the civil service and organisations that require social as well as economic insight. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in economics, political economy, social science or a related field.
