BSc Economics
About this course
Economics is the social science that studies how individuals, organisations and societies make decisions about the production, distribution and consumption of goods and services. It analyses the forces that shape market behaviour, the policies governments use to manage economies, and the distributional consequences of how resources are allocated. The discipline combines rigorous mathematical modelling with engagement with real-world questions of employment, inflation, growth, trade, inequality and environmental sustainability. At Aberystwyth the BSc Economics degree focuses on the wide range of issues that economics helps to illuminate in everyday life. You will examine the creation of employment, the dynamics of inflation, the workings of international trade, the nature of business competition, the drivers of innovation and growth, the development of emerging markets, the economics of natural resource management, and the ways in which government policy affects all of these. The programme runs over three years full time, developing your quantitative and analytical skills alongside your understanding of economic theory and its applications. Economics graduates are consistently among the most employed of all social science graduates. Finance, banking, investment, consultancy, government economic departments, central banks, international organisations, think tanks, public policy research, business analysis and corporate strategy are among the many careers that draw on the skills this degree develops. The combination of analytical rigour, quantitative competence and the ability to reason carefully about complex real-world systems is valued across virtually every sector. Postgraduate study in economics, finance, public policy or data science is a natural further step for those seeking specialist or research-focused roles.
