About this course
Economics combined with Spanish at the University of St Andrews brings together two disciplines that share a deep concern with how people make decisions within institutions, communities, and systems shaped by history, culture, and power. Economics provides you with rigorous analytical tools for understanding markets, policy, and behaviour. Spanish opens access to one of the world's most widely spoken languages and to the rich and varied cultures of Spain and Latin America, regions of growing economic and political significance. You will develop a structured foundation in economic concepts, principles, and quantitative methods, building the capacity to model and analyse economic phenomena with precision. Alongside this you will achieve genuine proficiency in Spanish, reading literature, engaging with contemporary media and politics, and developing the cultural understanding that makes language skills genuinely useful in professional contexts. The four-year programme at St Andrews includes a year abroad, which is central to the course: you will spend time studying or working in a Spanish-speaking country, deepening your language ability and your first-hand understanding of the economies and societies you have been studying.
