About this course

Economics at the London School of Economics and Political Science is one of the most demanding and distinguished economics degrees available in the world. The discipline asks how individuals and societies make choices about the allocation of scarce resources, how markets and prices coordinate those choices, and what the consequences are for growth, distribution, wellbeing and the environment. But economics is also the discipline that asks why inequalities persist and widen, what drives gender pay gaps, how climate change can be addressed through policy, and how international trade and finance reshape the possibilities available to countries at different levels of development. These are not merely technical questions; they are among the most important questions of our time. At the LSE you will engage with the full range of economic theory and method, developing strong foundations in microeconomics, macroeconomics and econometrics before exploring the field's breadth through topics in development economics, financial economics, public economics, labour economics and beyond. The programme includes a year abroad, which extends the full course over four years full time and provides the opportunity to pursue economics in a different intellectual environment. The LSE's location in London and its global alumni network provide unparalleled access to the worlds of finance, policy and international affairs. You will develop rigorous analytical and quantitative skills, the ability to evaluate evidence and construct well-reasoned arguments, and the capacity to apply economic thinking to real policy and business problems. Graduates from this programme enter the most competitive graduate positions in finance, economic consultancy, the civil service, international organisations, academia and the technology sector. Postgraduate study in economics, finance, public policy or a related quantitative field is also pursued by a significant proportion of graduates.
