About this course

Economics and management is a combination that brings together two of the most practically important intellectual disciplines available in higher education. Economics provides the theoretical and quantitative tools to understand how markets, incentives, and institutions work, and what happens when they succeed or fail. Management examines how organisations are designed, led, and run, drawing on economics, psychology, sociology, and strategy to understand decision-making and performance at the level of the firm and its people. Together they equip you to think rigorously about economic systems while also developing the practical knowledge needed to lead and operate organisations in a complex world. At the University of St Andrews, you will study this as a four-year MA (Hons) programme, with a year abroad built in. St Andrews is one of the UK's oldest universities and has a distinctive curriculum structure in which the first two years give you breadth across a range of subjects before you focus in depth in your final two years. The year abroad broadens your experience and adds an international dimension to your education that is increasingly valued by employers in business, finance, and public service. The economics component provides structured, cumulative training in micro and macroeconomics, quantitative and model-based methods, and economic analysis. The management component examines organisational behaviour, strategy, marketing, operations, and leadership. You will develop strong analytical and quantitative skills alongside the broader reasoning and communication capacities that management education requires. St Andrews' small-group teaching and research-active faculty mean the learning environment is intellectually rigorous and personally engaged. Graduates from economics and management programmes enter careers in investment banking, consulting, corporate management, public policy, entrepreneurship, and a wide range of other fields. The combination of economic rigour and management understanding is appealing to a broad range of employers. Postgraduate study in economics, finance, management, or public policy is a common and well-supported next step.
