BSc Ecology (with year in industry)
About this course
Ecology is the scientific study of the relationships between living organisms and their environments, examining how species interact with one another and with the physical world, and how communities, populations, and ecosystems are structured, function, and change over time. It is a discipline with immediate and pressing relevance: as biodiversity loss accelerates and ecosystems face mounting pressure from climate change, land use change, pollution, and invasive species, the need for trained ecologists who can document, understand, and help address these challenges has never been greater. At Aberystwyth University this four-year programme includes a year in industry, built into the degree to give you sustained professional experience in an ecology or environmental organisation during your studies. You will develop a strong grounding in biological science, field and laboratory skills, data analysis, and the theoretical frameworks of population ecology, community ecology, and conservation biology. Aberystwyth's location in Wales, surrounded by diverse habitats including upland moorland, estuaries, woodlands, and the coast, provides exceptional opportunities for fieldwork that many ecology programmes cannot match. You will also develop quantitative and computational skills that are increasingly central to modern ecological research and practice. Ecology graduates are in demand across conservation organisations, environmental consultancies, government agencies, research institutions, wildlife trusts, and international development bodies. Roles in ecological survey and assessment, habitat management, environmental impact assessment, species conservation, and biodiversity monitoring are all realistic career destinations. Many graduates also pursue postgraduate study in ecology, conservation biology, environmental science, or related fields to develop specialist expertise and advance into research or senior professional roles.
