BSc Ecology and Conservation
About this course
Ecology and conservation addresses the relationships between living organisms and their environments, and the urgent challenge of protecting biodiversity in the face of habitat loss, climate change, invasive species, and other human-driven pressures. Ecology is the scientific foundation of conservation, providing the understanding of population dynamics, food webs, ecosystem function, and species interactions that conservation managers need to make sound decisions. Together, these disciplines equip students to contribute practically to protecting the natural world. This three-year full-time programme at Anglia Ruskin University provides a grounded scientific education in both ecology and conservation biology. You will study population and community ecology, wildlife management, conservation genetics, habitat assessment, environmental legislation, and the research and survey methods used by professional ecologists. ARU has campuses in Cambridge and Chelmsford, and the diverse ecosystems of East Anglia, including wetlands, heathlands, coastal habitats, and agricultural landscapes, provide an excellent context for field-based learning. You will develop practical skills in species identification, ecological surveying, data collection and analysis, and the writing of ecological reports, all of which are directly valued by employers in the sector. Graduates from this programme pursue careers as ecologists, conservation officers, wildlife managers, environmental consultants, and fieldwork technicians, working for conservation charities, environmental consultancies, national parks, government agencies, and local authorities. The practical survey skills and ecological knowledge you develop are directly applicable to roles in ecological impact assessment, habitat management, and species monitoring. Postgraduate study in ecology, conservation biology, or environmental management is an option for those who want to specialise further or move into research roles.
