About this course

East Asian studies is an interdisciplinary field that brings together language, history, culture, politics, economics and society to examine the countries and civilisations of East Asia, principally China, Japan and Korea, which together account for some of the world's most significant economies, the richest and oldest continuous cultural traditions, and some of the most consequential geopolitical dynamics of the twenty-first century. Studying East Asia in depth requires both linguistic access, since the languages are profoundly different from European ones, and broad contextual knowledge across historical, cultural and contemporary dimensions. At Manchester, this four-year programme includes an international study component, giving you extended exposure to an East Asian country and its language and culture in situ. You will develop language skills in one or more East Asian languages alongside the study of East Asian history, politics, economics, literature and society. Manchester has one of the UK's strongest East Asian studies programmes, with research expertise across the region, and the international study component gives you direct experience of studying or working in East Asia. A sandwich year and work placement element are also included in the programme. The typical entry tariff is 152 UCAS points. Graduates move into careers in diplomacy and international relations, international business, journalism and media, government and the civil service, NGOs and development organisations, academia, finance, consultancy and the cultural sector. Knowledge of East Asian languages and deep familiarity with East Asian societies is increasingly valued by employers in a world where China, Japan and Korea play central roles in global trade, technology and geopolitics. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in East Asian studies, Chinese or Japanese studies, international relations or area studies.
