BSc Earth, Environmental and Marine Sciences
About this course
Earth, Environmental and Marine Sciences encompasses some of the most intellectually exciting and practically urgent fields in science: the study of our planet's physical structure, its oceans, its climate systems, and the life that inhabits its seas. Whether you are drawn to the solid geology of the deep Earth, the fluid dynamics of ocean circulation, the chemistry of marine ecosystems, or the environmental sciences that help us understand and manage human impacts on natural systems, this broad entry route provides a foundation from which to develop specialist knowledge across a remarkable range of disciplines. At the University of Liverpool, this four-year, full-time programme begins with a foundation year at Carmel College in St Helens, a short distance from the university, where small class sizes and high academic standards provide an excellent base for students without a strong prior background in science. Following the foundation year, you progress to your chosen degree, which may be in Geology, Geophysics, Ocean Sciences, Geography and Oceanography, Marine Biology with Oceanography, or related combinations, all delivered at one of the UK's leading marine and earth science institutions. The programme includes a sandwich year and work placements alongside the option of a year abroad, giving you the professional and international experience that employers in the environmental and geoscience sectors value highly. Graduates with these disciplinary backgrounds are in demand across resource extraction, environmental consultancy, climate research, oceanographic institutions, government environmental agencies, marine conservation, and engineering geology. The combination of analytical scientific training, fieldwork experience, and professional placement prepares graduates for a wide range of careers in sectors where understanding the Earth and its systems is professionally essential.
