BA Early Childhood Studies
About this course
Early childhood studies is an interdisciplinary field concerned with understanding and supporting the development, wellbeing and rights of children from birth to around eight years of age. It draws on developmental psychology, sociology, education, social policy and health to examine how young children grow, learn and thrive, and how the environments, relationships and services that surround them shape their outcomes. It is a field with strong ethical and political dimensions, concerned not just with what children need but with what they are entitled to and with how inequalities in childhood play out across the life course. At the University of Gloucestershire, this three-year full-time degree is aligned with the QAA Benchmarks for Early Childhood Studies degrees and is a member of the Early Childhood Studies Degree Network, which means the programme meets nationally recognised standards for the field. A distinctive feature is the opportunity to earn sector-recognised graduate practitioner status as part of the degree, which strengthens your professional standing in early childhood settings. You will study child development, early learning and pedagogy, safeguarding and child protection, health and wellbeing, inclusion and diversity, policy and practice, and the theoretical frameworks that inform high-quality early years provision. Practice is woven through the programme alongside academic study. You will engage with placements and work-related learning that connect your theoretical knowledge to real professional contexts, developing the reflective and analytical skills that characterise the most effective early years practitioners. Graduates move into roles in early years education and childcare settings, family support, children's centres, social care, health visiting, community development, and policy. Some graduates go on to further professional training as teachers, social workers or health professionals. Postgraduate study in early childhood, education, social work or public health is also a pathway for those who want to develop deeper expertise.
