BA Early Childhood Studies
About this course
Early childhood studies is a multidisciplinary field concerned with children in the years from birth to around eight, examining how they grow, learn, develop relationships, and are shaped by the social, cultural, and institutional environments in which they are raised. It draws on developmental psychology, education, sociology, and social policy to build a rigorous and evidence-based understanding of early childhood, and to prepare practitioners to support children's flourishing in ways that are informed by research and sensitive to context. At Teesside University, this part-time programme includes a distinctive historical dimension, inviting you to discover the key moments in the history of British education that have shaped current education policy, practice, and curriculum. Through this historical approach, you will consider how education has changed through a wider moral, social, and political context, developing the critical perspective needed to understand why early childhood provision looks as it does and how it might be improved. You will study child development theory, early years pedagogy, inclusive practice, and the policy frameworks that govern children's services, building a broad professional and academic foundation. Graduates of early childhood studies programmes work as early years practitioners, family support workers, children's centre staff, local authority early years advisers, and professionals in voluntary sector organisations serving children and families. The analytical and reflective skills the degree develops are also valued in policy, research, and education leadership roles. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in education, social work, child health, or early years policy, where the broad foundation of the undergraduate degree supports more specialised enquiry.
