About this course

Early childhood studies is an interdisciplinary field concerned with the development, education and wellbeing of children from birth to approximately eight years of age. It draws on psychology, sociology, education, health and policy to build a comprehensive understanding of how young children grow, learn and thrive, and what conditions support or undermine their flourishing. The early years are increasingly recognised as the most formative period of human development, making this a field of both scholarly interest and significant social importance. At Middlesex, this part-time programme allows you to develop your knowledge and skills in early childhood while managing other commitments. This is particularly well suited to those already working in early years settings, childcare, family support or related roles, who want to develop their professional understanding alongside their practice. You will develop the theoretical knowledge, practical skills and critical insight needed to understand and support young children across a range of contexts, from nurseries and pre-schools to family support services and children's centres. You will study child development from birth through the early years of primary school, exploring cognitive, emotional, social and physical development in the light of current research. The programme also engages with early education theory and pedagogy, the policy context for early years provision in the UK, and the professional and ethical dimensions of working with very young children and their families. Graduates work in early years settings, nurseries, children's centres, family support services, social care, education management and policy. Many graduates continue to professional training in teaching, social work or educational psychology. The degree is widely recognised as a professional qualification within the early years sector and provides a strong foundation for career development in this field.
