BA Early Childhood and Special Educational Needs
About this course
Early Childhood and Special Educational Needs is a degree that combines two complementary fields of professional and academic study, examining both the general principles of early childhood development and the specific needs, rights and educational support required by children with disabilities and additional learning needs. It is a programme grounded in respect for children as capable individuals with inherent rights, and it prepares practitioners who can advocate effectively for the most vulnerable children in the earliest and most critical years of their development. At Liverpool Hope University, this three-year full-time programme develops advanced knowledge about young children's development, the factors that support or impede it, and the range of additional needs that practitioners in early years and educational settings encounter. You will study child development theory, inclusive pedagogy, communication and interaction, sensory and physical needs, learning differences, the legislative framework for special educational needs, and the policy contexts in which early years provision operates. A sandwich year, year abroad, and work placement are all available, giving you substantial professional and international experience before you graduate. Graduates are well prepared for careers in early years education, nursery and children's centre leadership, special educational needs coordination, teaching assistant roles and SENCO roles in schools, family support, early intervention services, and roles in the voluntary sector concerned with children with additional needs. Many go on to qualify as teachers through a PGCE, often specialising in special educational needs or early years. Others pursue postgraduate study in educational psychology, early childhood, or inclusion, deepening their expertise for specialist professional practice or research.
