About this course
Early childhood and psychology is a degree that brings together two disciplines concerned with human development and wellbeing at its most fundamental. Early childhood studies examines how children develop from birth through to middle childhood, exploring the physical, cognitive, emotional, and social dimensions of development and the conditions that support or hinder it. Psychology provides the scientific framework for understanding human behaviour, learning, and mental processes, and when applied to early childhood it illuminates the mechanisms through which experience shapes development and the effects of relationships, environments, and inequalities on young lives. At Liverpool Hope University, this three-year degree develops advanced knowledge about young children, covering child development, interactions, the importance of play, and the effects of local and global inequalities on children's experiences and outcomes. Psychology modules provide the theoretical and empirical grounding that informs evidence-based practice with young children and families. You will develop the ability to advocate for young children's needs and rights, combining academic understanding with a commitment to children's wellbeing. The degree includes a sandwich year in industry, a year abroad, and work placement opportunities, giving you substantial professional experience in settings where young children are cared for and educated, as well as an international perspective on how different societies and cultures support early childhood development. Graduates of early childhood and psychology degrees move into careers in early years education and care, child and family social work, educational psychology support, children's health services, and the voluntary sector. Many progress to postgraduate training in areas such as primary teaching, educational psychology, clinical psychology, counselling, or social work, where the undergraduate combination provides a strong foundation. Others pursue roles in early years policy, research, and workforce development, or work with organisations concerned with children's rights and welfare at national and international levels.
