About this course

Drama and Religion, Theology and Spirituality is an intellectually rich combination that brings together two disciplines with deep and lasting connections. Drama is one of the oldest forms through which human communities have explored religious experience, moral questions, and the mysteries of existence: ancient Greek tragedy was staged as part of religious festivals, medieval mystery plays dramatised scripture for largely illiterate audiences, and theatre continues to engage with questions of meaning, suffering and transcendence that resist purely rational resolution. Theology and spirituality, meanwhile, provide the conceptual frameworks through which those questions have been articulated, debated and lived across religious traditions and communities. At Liverpool Hope University, this programme includes a foundation year, providing additional academic preparation for students who need it before engaging with the full degree curriculum. You will study the origins and development of dramatic form, develop your practical skills in acting, devising and directing, and engage with the theoretical and critical questions that contemporary theatre raises, alongside a serious engagement with Christian theology, world religions, ethics, and the study of spirituality in its many forms. Liverpool's vibrant cultural and religious life, and Hope's own heritage as a university rooted in Christian ecumenical tradition, provide a distinctive environment for this combination. A sandwich year, year abroad, and work placement are all available, giving you professional and international experience alongside your academic work. Graduates pursue careers in performing arts, chaplaincy, religious education, community arts, drama therapy, social work, arts administration, and the voluntary sector. Many also go on to postgraduate study in theology, drama, pastoral care, or religious education.
