BD Divinity
About this course
Divinity is the scholarly study of the Christian faith and tradition, examining its theology, history, texts, institutions and contemporary practice with academic rigour. It is a discipline that sits within the broader field of religious studies but with a particular focus on Christian thought, from the early church fathers and medieval scholasticism through the Reformation and modern theology to contemporary debates about ethics, interfaith relations and the role of religion in public life. Studying divinity develops your capacity for careful textual interpretation, historical analysis and sustained theological argument, alongside deep engagement with one of the most influential intellectual and spiritual traditions in human history. At the University of Edinburgh this four-year full-time degree engages with the Christian faith in the context of its history, institutions and contemporary significance, while also providing opportunities to explore the world's major religions in comparative perspective. The programme is accredited by the Church of Scotland, providing a recognised pathway for those considering ministry, while also developing the broad transferable skills valued across many other careers. The degree includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study theological questions in an international academic context. Graduates from Divinity degrees go on to careers in ministry and chaplaincy, education, journalism, international development, the voluntary and charitable sector, public policy and academia. The analytical, writing and communication skills that the study of divinity develops are valued across many professional contexts beyond ministry. Postgraduate study in theology, religious studies, philosophy of religion, ethics, biblical studies or church history is a natural continuation for those wishing to pursue academic or specialist professional careers, including entry to ordination training for those called to Christian ministry.
