About this course

Digital media and information studies examines how digital technologies are transforming the ways in which content and knowledge are created, distributed, and experienced across society, culture, and the arts. It brings a human perspective to the issues of the digital age, asking not just how platforms and information systems work but what they mean for identity, democracy, creativity, and social life. Theatre studies, meanwhile, is the academic and practical investigation of performance, from the canonical texts of world theatre to devised practice, performance theory, and the social functions of the theatrical event. Together they explore two of the most significant ways in which human beings communicate and make meaning: through digital networks and through live performance. At the University of Glasgow, this part-time programme combines both fields, allowing you to study at a pace suited to other commitments. The combination is more coherent than it might initially appear: both disciplines are concerned with how technologies, whether of print, screen, or stage, shape the conditions of human expression and experience. You will develop digital literacy and critical analytical skills alongside a deep understanding of performance and theatre history, engaging with contemporary debates in both areas. The programme includes a year abroad, providing an international dimension to your study of these two fields. Graduates from programmes combining digital media with theatre studies are well placed for careers in arts organisations, digital communications, broadcasting, education, cultural programming, community arts, and content creation, as well as for postgraduate study in digital media, theatre studies, or cultural theory.
