MA Digital Media & Information Studies/Geography
About this course
Digital media and information studies examines how digital technologies transform the way information is created, shared, stored, and experienced, bringing a humanistic and critical perspective to the questions that the digital age raises about culture, knowledge, and society. Geography provides the spatial and environmental dimension, examining how the physical and human world is organised across different scales and how digital technologies are themselves reshaping our relationship to place, space, and the distribution of resources and power. Together they produce a graduate with an unusual combination of critical and analytical skills. At Glasgow, this four-year full-time programme explores the human dimensions of digital media and information alongside the core concerns of geography, from physical processes and environmental systems to economic geographies, urban dynamics, and geospatial analysis. You will develop skills in critical analysis of digital content and information systems, alongside the quantitative and qualitative methods used in geographical research, including fieldwork, GIS, and data interpretation. A year abroad is built into the programme, providing the opportunity to study in a different cultural and geographical context and to develop a comparative perspective on how digital information and geographical processes interact in different settings. Graduates from this combination are well positioned for careers in data analysis, digital communications, planning and environmental consultancy, journalism, public policy, cultural heritage, and research. The ability to think critically about both digital information and spatial patterns is increasingly valued in contexts where data and place converge, from urban analytics to environmental management. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in digital humanities, geography, information science, or related fields.
