MA Digital Media & Information Studies/English Literature
About this course
Digital media and information studies combined with English literature is a pairing that addresses some of the most pressing intellectual questions of our time, where is culture going in a digital world, and what remains essential about literature and the close reading it demands? Digital media and information studies brings a human perspective to the digital age, examining how digital content is created, used, and distributed, and what the rise of digital platforms means for culture, knowledge, and public life. English literature develops the habits of careful, sensitive reading and critical analysis that literature has always required, across a range of periods and traditions from early modern writing to the present day. At the University of Glasgow this part-time programme draws on strengths in both areas, combining expertise in literature spanning American, Irish, and postcolonial traditions, critical theory, creative writing, and the relationship between literature and other arts, with a rigorous engagement with digital culture and media. The degree includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study in a different intellectual environment and to bring an international perspective to these questions. Studying part-time allows you to engage with both disciplines at a pace that accommodates other commitments. You will develop close-reading skills, research and analytical capabilities, critical writing ability, and a sophisticated understanding of how digital contexts are reshaping the production and reception of cultural texts. The combination is unusually well-suited to careers that require both humanistic depth and digital literacy. Graduates pursue careers in digital content, publishing, journalism, cultural heritage, broadcasting, marketing and communications, education, and the broader creative industries. Postgraduate study in digital humanities, English literature, media studies, or information management is also a well-established route.
