About this course

Digital media and information studies, combined with film and television studies, gives you a programme that addresses both the technologies through which contemporary culture is produced and distributed and the specific art forms of cinema and broadcast media that have shaped how we understand storytelling, representation, and public life. Digital media and information studies explores how digital content is created, circulated, and consumed, and what the implications are for society, culture, and knowledge. Film and television studies examines the moving image as an art form and as a social phenomenon, investigating how films and programmes are made, what they mean, and how they shape audiences and public culture. At the University of Glasgow, this four-year full-time programme includes a year abroad, and it brings a human perspective to the issues of the digital age alongside a serious engagement with cinema and broadcasting as cultural forms. You will study the history and theory of digital media, the political economy of information, the aesthetics and history of film, television genres and industries, and the social and cultural contexts in which moving image media operates. Glasgow's strong research presence in both film studies and digital humanities provides an intellectually stimulating context for this combination. Graduates go on to careers in the film and television industries, digital content production, media policy, journalism, education, archives, and cultural organisations. The combination of technical and cultural knowledge the degree develops is valued in a media landscape that is simultaneously more digital and more visual than at any previous point in history. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in film studies, media studies, digital humanities, or cultural studies, and some pursue research or professional careers in the creative industries.
