BA Digital Media and Sociology
About this course
Digital Media and Sociology is a degree that examines the digital world from both a technical-creative and a social-analytical perspective. Digital media study develops your practical skills in producing, editing and communicating across digital platforms, alongside your understanding of how media industries operate and how digital technologies shape cultural production. Sociology gives you the theoretical tools to examine how society is organised, how power is distributed and how digital technologies interact with existing social structures, inequalities and identities. Together they prepare you to both create and critically analyse media in an age defined by rapid technological change. At Keele University this three-year full-time degree develops your ability to understand and engage with social issues through digital media, and to produce media content that is informed by that understanding. You will develop practical digital skills alongside sociological analysis, exploring how media, technology and society are interconnected and how that relationship is changing. The course includes a sandwich year, a year abroad and a work placement, giving you substantial professional and international experience during your studies and helping you build the skills and confidence to enter a competitive media job market. Graduates from Digital Media and Sociology degrees go on to careers in media production, communications, social media management, digital marketing, content strategy, journalism and public relations. Others find roles in community development, social research, policy analysis, education and the voluntary sector. The combination of digital production skills and sociological thinking is valued by employers across media, technology and public sector organisations. For those wishing to continue their studies, the degree provides a good foundation for postgraduate work in media, digital culture, communications or sociology.
