BSc Developmental Psychology with a Year Abroad
About this course
Developmental psychology is the scientific study of how human beings change across the lifespan, from the earliest months of infancy through childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and old age. It examines the biological, cognitive, social, and emotional processes that drive development, asking how language, thought, social understanding, and identity develop, what the effects of early experience are on later outcomes, and how development can go off track and what can be done to support it. The discipline has both fundamental scientific interest and significant practical applications in education, clinical psychology, health, and social policy. At the University of East Anglia, this four-year programme focuses specifically on developmental psychology while also covering the core areas of the discipline required for British Psychological Society accreditation, providing Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership for those who achieve the necessary standard. The programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study developmental psychology in another country, which enriches your understanding of how development is studied and how its contexts vary across different societies and cultures. UEA has particular research strengths in language development, social cognition, and the development of children with autism spectrum conditions, and the programme reflects these areas of expertise. Graduates who wish to practise as chartered psychologists must undertake further postgraduate training after completing a BPS-accredited degree. Developmental psychologists can apply for doctoral training in clinical psychology, educational psychology, or research, each of which leads to different professional roles. Many graduates without further professional training move into careers in education, social care, early childhood services, research, and policy, where understanding of developmental processes is directly relevant. The growing field of evidence-based early intervention provides further opportunities for graduates who wish to apply developmental knowledge in practice settings. Postgraduate research in developmental psychology is another well-established path.
