About this course
Design at Cambridge is an unusual and ambitious degree that deliberately dissolves the boundaries between architecture, engineering, and materials science, asking students to bring all three together in addressing some of the most consequential challenges facing the built environment. Climate change, resource scarcity, urban growth, and the need to design buildings and infrastructure that are both functional and sustainable are not problems that can be solved from within any single discipline, and this degree is built on the conviction that the most significant solutions will come from designers who can think fluently across all three fields. At the University of Cambridge this four-year full-time programme combines rigorous scientific and mathematical training with design thinking and creative problem-solving, developing graduates who can engage with global issues in the built environment from multiple angles simultaneously. You will study structural engineering, materials behaviour, environmental systems, and architectural design alongside the theoretical and historical dimensions of the built environment, developing an integrated perspective that is rare anywhere in the world. The Cambridge environment, with its extraordinary concentration of research and intellectual talent, provides an unusually rich context for this kind of interdisciplinary work. Graduates from this programme go on to careers in architecture, structural and environmental engineering, product design, research, policy, and innovation roles in the built environment sector. The ability to work across disciplinary boundaries is a genuine competitive advantage in an industry that increasingly recognises that the most important challenges cannot be solved from within a single specialism. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study, either at Cambridge or elsewhere, deepening their expertise in a particular area of design, engineering, or materials research. Others move into consultancy, practice, or roles in the technology and sustainability sectors that draw on this integrated perspective.
