BDS Dentistry
About this course
Dentistry is one of the most technically demanding and personally rewarding of the healthcare professions, concerned with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of conditions affecting the teeth, mouth, and associated structures. Dentists examine patients, interpret radiographs, diagnose dental and oral health conditions, carry out restorations, extractions, and other operative procedures, design and fit prosthetics and orthodontic appliances, and provide the preventive advice and intervention needed to help patients maintain their oral health over a lifetime. Oral health is integral to general health and quality of life, and the dentist's role in promoting it goes well beyond the technical execution of treatments. At Queen's University Belfast, this five-year full-time degree develops the professional behaviours, clinical operative skills, and scientific knowledge needed to practise as a dentist. You will progress through the clinical sciences, the applied clinical skills of dentistry, and sustained clinical experience on real patients across a range of clinical environments, both within the dental school and in outreach placements in community and hospital settings. The programme emphasises the development of professional judgement, patient communication, and ethical practice alongside technical skill, recognising that dentistry is as much about the relationship between clinician and patient as it is about operative competence. Clinical training under supervision builds confidence and the breadth of experience needed for professional registration. Graduates are eligible to register with the General Dental Council and to practise as dentists in NHS and private dental practices across the UK and internationally. The profession offers a varied and rewarding career with considerable autonomy and strong employment prospects. Many dentists specialise in areas such as oral surgery, orthodontics, restorative dentistry, paediatric dentistry, or periodontology through postgraduate training. Others enter dental education, research, or public health dentistry. The clinical, communicative, and scientific foundation the degree provides opens a career with exceptional depth and variety.
