About this course
Dentistry is one of the most directly patient-centred healthcare professions, concerned with preventing and treating diseases and conditions affecting the teeth, mouth, and associated structures. Dentists provide a wide range of care, from routine examinations, hygiene advice, and restorations to more complex procedures in oral surgery, periodontics, and restorative dentistry. They work with patients across all age groups, often building long-term relationships that combine clinical skill with genuine sensitivity to individual needs, anxieties, and circumstances. At King's College London this five-year full-time BDS programme combines the very latest thinking in dental education with early clinical experience, situating students in a rich and diverse clinical environment from an early stage of their training. You will be taught by experienced staff with a strong international background and will encounter a breadth of clinical cases that reflects the diversity of the patient populations King's serves in central and south London. The programme develops your scientific understanding of oral biology, dental materials, pharmacology, and radiography alongside the clinical skills needed to provide safe and effective dental care. Early clinical experience is a defining feature of the programme, ensuring that your theoretical learning is grounded in the realities of patient care from the beginning. Graduates from King's dentistry programme enter the Foundation Dentist Programme, the year of supervised practice that all newly registered dentists in the UK complete before independent practice. From there, paths lead into general practice, hospital dentistry, community dental services, academic dentistry, and specialty training in areas such as oral surgery, orthodontics, periodontics, and restorative dentistry.
