BSc Data Science with Foundation Year
About this course
Data science is the discipline that makes sense of the vast quantities of information now generated by digital systems, organisations, and scientific instruments. It draws on mathematics, statistics, and computer science to collect, clean, analyse, and visualise data, and to build models that can extract insight and inform decisions. As organisations across every sector become increasingly dependent on data, the ability to work with it rigorously and creatively has become one of the most sought-after skills in the labour market. At Birkbeck College this four-year full-time programme includes a foundation year that builds the mathematical, statistical, and computational foundations you need before engaging with degree-level data science. The main degree then develops your knowledge and skills in collecting, storing, analysing, and visualising data using cutting-edge techniques, as well as the ability to extract information and communicate it in ways that inform decision-making across a wide variety of organisational contexts. You will study statistics, machine learning, database design, programming, and the mathematical underpinnings of data analysis, developing both technical depth and the broader understanding of how data science fits into real organisational and social contexts. Problem-solving is central to the programme throughout. You will work on real-world challenges, developing the habit of translating a practical question into a data problem, choosing appropriate methods, and communicating your findings clearly to audiences who may not share your technical background. Critical evaluation of methods and results, including an awareness of the limitations and potential biases of data and models, is woven into the curriculum. Graduates of data science programmes are in high demand across finance, technology, healthcare, government, retail, research, and the media. Roles include data scientist, data analyst, machine learning engineer, business intelligence analyst, and data-driven software developer. Postgraduate study in data science, statistics, or a related applied field is also an option for those who wish to specialise further or pursue research.
