About this course

Danish and Spanish is an unusual combination that gives you access to two very different linguistic and cultural worlds, each with its own rich literary tradition and each opening doors into distinct international contexts. Danish is the language of Denmark and one of the Scandinavian languages, spoken by a relatively small population but with outsized cultural and commercial influence through Denmark's prominent role in European politics, design, literature, and business. Spanish, spoken across Spain and Latin America, is one of the world's major languages by number of speakers, with a correspondingly diverse set of literary and cultural traditions. At University College London, this four-year full-time programme is a joint honours degree split equally between the two languages. You will develop skills in speaking, listening, reading, writing, and translation in both Danish and Spanish, taking modules that cover not only language proficiency but cultural topics including literature, history, film, linguistics, and politics. The wide variety of modules available means you can tailor the degree to your own interests, building depth in the aspects of Danish and Spanish culture that matter most to you. In the third year you will spend a year abroad split between countries where your two languages are spoken, gaining the immersive linguistic and cultural experience that transforms classroom competence into genuine fluency. Graduates of this combination are genuinely unusual in the job market. Danish is in demand in Scandinavian business, trade, and policy contexts, while Spanish opens the enormous and diverse sphere of Latin America and Spain. International business, diplomacy, translation and interpreting, journalism, cultural work, and European and international organisations are natural career contexts. Postgraduate study in Scandinavian studies, Hispanic studies, translation and interpreting, or European studies is a well-established route for those who wish to develop their expertise further.
