BA Dance
About this course
Dance as a university discipline is both a physical and an intellectual pursuit. It involves rigorous technical training across a range of styles and traditions, the development of choreographic thinking and creative practice, and a critical engagement with the history, theory, and cultural contexts that give dance its meanings. It takes seriously both the embodied knowledge that comes from years of physical practice and the analytical frameworks that allow you to situate that practice in the wider world. At Chichester you will explore the full range of the contemporary dance landscape, developing your technique through regular classes in a variety of styles while also engaging with choreography, performance, and the study of dance history and theory. You will develop as both a performer and a thinker, learning to analyse dance works critically, to make creative decisions about your own practice, and to understand the cultural and social contexts in which dance operates. The three-year full-time programme gives you the space to pursue your love of the form in depth and to prepare for the diverse careers that the dance industry now offers. Graduates pursue careers as performers, choreographers, dance teachers, community artists, and arts administrators. Many work in education, using dance as a tool for wellbeing, inclusion, and creative expression in schools and community settings. Others move into arts management, youth arts, physical theatre, and related performance fields. The discipline, creativity, collaboration, and physical awareness that dance training develops are qualities that employers across many sectors value, and dance graduates are often found in careers well beyond the stage.
