About this course

Czech with Slovak and Hebrew is an unusual and intellectually rich language combination available through the Oxford European and Middle Eastern Languages programme, which enables students to combine one European language with a Middle Eastern or closely related language, taking advantage of the cultural links that exist between these traditions. Czech and Slovak are closely related Slavic languages of Central Europe that open access to the literary, philosophical, and political cultures of Bohemia, Moravia, and Slovakia, encompassing the rich twentieth-century traditions shaped by the Habsburg era, the interwar republics, communism, and the post-1989 transitions. Hebrew is one of the world's oldest continuously used written languages, and modern Hebrew, revived as a spoken vernacular in the late nineteenth century, is the national language of Israel and the language of a rich modern literature alongside the ancient biblical and classical tradition. At the University of Oxford, this three-year full-time programme is taught within one of the world's great research universities for languages and literature, with expert staff in both Slavonic and Hebrew studies. You will develop genuine linguistic proficiency in Czech, Slovak, and Hebrew, engaging with the literary, cultural, and historical traditions of each language in depth. The combination creates opportunities to explore the connections between Jewish Central European culture and the Hebrew literary tradition, a particularly rewarding area for comparative literary and cultural study. With a typical entry tariff of 168 UCAS points, this is a highly competitive programme. Graduates pursue careers in diplomacy, international organisations, journalism, translation and interpreting, academic research, education, publishing, intelligence and government, Jewish and Central European cultural organisations, and international business involving Israel or the Czech and Slovak regions.
