About this course
Czech and Danish is a combination that reflects a genuinely cosmopolitan intellectual ambition, bringing together two languages from distinct European linguistic families, Czech from the Slavic group and Danish from the North Germanic, alongside the literary, cultural, historical and political traditions that each language carries. Studying two European languages simultaneously sharpens your linguistic awareness, your sensitivity to how grammar, vocabulary and idiom differ between language families, and your capacity for cross-cultural analysis. Both Czech and Danish open access to societies that have made significant contributions to European thought, literature, politics and design. At University College London this four-year full-time BA divides equally between your two languages, with modules covering speaking, listening, reading, writing and translation in both. Beyond language, you will engage with cultural topics including literature, history, film, linguistics and politics, tailoring the programme to your areas of interest from the range of options available. In your third year you will spend a year abroad split between countries where your two languages are spoken, giving you the immersive linguistic and cultural experience that is essential for genuine fluency and deep understanding of the societies you are studying. Graduates from Czech and Danish language degrees are well placed for careers where multilingualism and European cultural expertise are valued. Many find roles in translation and interpretation, European organisations, business development and diplomatic services. Others work in journalism, publishing, education, cultural institutions and international NGOs. The analytical skills developed through studying two quite different language systems are also valued in research environments and across the broader public and private sectors.
