About this course
Welsh is one of the oldest living languages in Europe and one of the most remarkable linguistic and cultural survivals in the world, with a continuous literary tradition stretching back to the sixth century and a thriving contemporary presence in broadcasting, education, government and daily life in Wales. Studying Welsh develops your fluency and expressiveness in the language alongside your understanding of its literature, history and the communities that use it, and it prepares you for a wide range of professional contexts in which Welsh-language skills are increasingly valued and often required. At Aberystwyth University this three-year full-time degree is offered to students who are either first-language or second-language Welsh speakers, recognising that learners at different starting points all have a place in Welsh studies at degree level. You will develop your ability to express yourself effectively in Welsh, both in writing and speech, across formal and creative registers, while also engaging with the breadth and richness of Welsh literature across different periods and forms. Aberystwyth's location in one of the strongest Welsh-speaking areas of Wales gives your studies a living cultural context, and the town and university community provide daily opportunities to use and develop your Welsh. Graduates from Welsh degrees go on to careers across a wide range of sectors, and many find that their Welsh language skills are a significant professional asset in Wales and beyond. Teaching is a common career path, both in Welsh-medium schools and in Welsh as a second language, but graduates also find roles in Welsh-language broadcasting with S4C and BBC Radio Cymru, publishing, translation, law, administration, the civil service, tourism and the arts. The ability to communicate fluently in Welsh opens doors across the public and third sectors in Wales, where bilingual capability is increasingly expected and valued.
