BSc Cyber Security with Placement
About this course
Cyber security is the discipline concerned with protecting digital systems, networks, data, and the people who depend on them from malicious attack, accidental compromise, and structural vulnerability. As organisations of every kind become ever more deeply reliant on digital infrastructure, and as the sophistication and frequency of cyber threats continues to grow, the demand for skilled cyber security professionals has become one of the most pressing workforce challenges across both public and private sectors. At the University of Gloucestershire, this four-year full-time degree includes a 12-month industry placement, giving you substantial professional experience before you graduate. The university provides dedicated support for your placement journey, including workshops and help with applications, ensuring you are well prepared to make the most of the opportunity. Across the degree you will study the technical and conceptual foundations of cyber security, including network security, cryptography, digital forensics, ethical hacking, and risk management. You will learn to understand how systems are attacked and how they can be defended, developing both the technical skills and the analytical mindset that the field requires. You will also engage with the policy, legal, and ethical dimensions of security, recognising that effective cyber security is as much a matter of governance and human behaviour as of technical implementation. You will develop problem-solving skills, the ability to think like both an attacker and a defender, and the professional judgement to assess and communicate risk in ways that are useful to organisations. The placement year allows you to put these skills into practice in a real professional environment and to build the networks and portfolio that employers look for. Graduates from cyber security degrees work in information security consultancy, penetration testing, security operations, threat intelligence, digital forensics, government and defence, financial services, and technology companies. The breadth of sectors that need cyber security professionals means graduates have considerable choice. Postgraduate study in cyber security, information assurance, or digital forensics is also available for those who wish to develop specialist expertise.
