Crime is not simply an act; it is a social, legal, and political concept whose meaning shifts depending on who defines it, who enforces the rules, and who is affected by the consequences. Criminology examines these questions from a social science perspective, drawing on sociology, psychology, history, and policy studies to understand why people offend, how institutions respond, and what the effects of punishment actually are. Criminal law provides the formal framework through which society defines prohibited conduct and structures the processes of prosecution, defence, and sentencing. Together, the two disciplines give you an unusually complete picture of how justice works, and how it sometimes fails.
