BSc Criminology
About this course
Criminology is the social scientific study of crime, criminal behaviour, and the systems through which societies respond to crime and deviance. It draws on sociology, psychology, law, and political science to ask fundamental questions about why people commit crime, how communities and institutions create or reduce criminogenic conditions, and whether the criminal justice systems we have, including the police, courts, and prisons, are just, effective, or capable of reform. It is a discipline that engages directly with some of the most pressing social and political questions of the day. At the University of Surrey, this three-year full-time degree develops your understanding of crime and criminal justice through a critical and evidence-based lens. You will engage with criminological theory and empirical research, studying topics including offending behaviour, victimisation, policing, punishment, rehabilitation, and the politics of criminal justice policy. Surrey notes that the curriculum integrates developing digital skills and confidence, reflecting a commitment to preparing graduates for the analytical and data-driven demands of modern criminal justice and policy environments. Criminology graduates go on to work in the criminal justice system, including the probation service, youth offending teams, prisons, police, and victim support organisations. Many also move into roles in social work, community development, housing, education, and research, where the analytical and social understanding criminology develops is valued. Policy research, journalism, and the voluntary sector working on criminal justice reform are also natural destinations. Many graduates pursue postgraduate study in criminology, criminal justice, social work, or law, deepening their expertise for specialist professional or academic careers.
