BSc Crime with Forensic Investigation
About this course
Crime with forensic investigation is a degree that sits at the meeting point of criminology and forensic science, two disciplines that are closely intertwined in professional practice but that each bring distinct methods and perspectives. Criminology examines why crime occurs, how societies respond to it, and what the criminal justice system achieves. Forensic investigation provides the scientific tools used to gather, analyse, and present physical evidence in criminal cases. Together they offer a rigorous and practically grounded approach to understanding and responding to crime. At the University of Huddersfield, you will build a strong foundation in forensic investigation alongside your criminological studies, learning how physical evidence is collected and processed, how forensic science contributes to criminal proceedings, and how scientific findings are communicated within the legal context. You will study areas including the biology, chemistry, and technology of forensic analysis as well as the broader criminological questions of criminal behaviour, policing, and justice. The programme develops both analytical and practical skills, and you will work in laboratory and applied settings as well as engaging with the social science dimensions of the discipline. The programme runs over three years full-time. Graduates of crime with forensic investigation programmes pursue careers in forensic science, policing, the criminal justice system, intelligence analysis, social work, and the voluntary sector. The combination of scientific and criminological training is valued by employers across the criminal justice sector and beyond. Many graduates also go on to postgraduate study in forensic science, criminology, law, or related disciplines to develop more specialised expertise.
