BA Creative Writing And English Literature
About this course
Creative writing and English literature is a degree for readers who are also writers, and for writers who know that serious reading is the foundation of good writing. English literature develops your ability to engage with the full range of the literary tradition, reading fiction, poetry, drama and non-fiction with critical care, attending to form and language as well as theme and meaning. Creative writing gives you the practice and the craft-level feedback that developing as a writer requires, working across different genres and forms and learning from the dialogue between your own work and the texts you study. At Edge Hill University, studied part-time, you will dive into genres, topics and periods across the literary tradition while also developing your own creative practice and finding your voice as a writer. Workshops are central to the creative writing dimension, offering peer critique and the sustained attention to drafting and revision that genuine development requires. A sandwich year, work placements and a year abroad are built into the programme, providing professional experience and the kind of broader life exposure that both writers and literary scholars benefit from. Edge Hill has a strong reputation for both its literary engagement and its support for student writers. Graduates pursue careers in publishing, editing, journalism, copywriting, communications, arts administration, teaching and the charitable sector, as well as developing independent writing practices in fiction, poetry, screenwriting or non-fiction. The analytical and communicative skills developed through English literature, combined with the craft and creative confidence that creative writing develops, are valued across any professional context that involves working with language. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in creative writing, publishing, English literature or education, and some develop careers that combine writing with other professional roles.
