About this course

Creative writing and drama together cultivate two forms of creative practice that have been intertwined throughout the history of literature and performance. Writing is the origin of dramatic text; drama is the realisation of writing in space, time, and human presence. Studying them together means understanding not just how to write but how writing becomes action, and not just how to perform but how performance is rooted in language and narrative. The combination develops you as both a maker of texts and a maker of theatre. At Liverpool Hope, in a city with a rich literary and theatrical tradition, you will work with writers, poets, academics, and theatre practitioners who are embedded in both the local creative community and the wider professional world. Creative writing study covers fiction, poetry, screenwriting, and creative non-fiction, developing your craft across genres and encouraging you to find your own distinct voice. Drama study develops your understanding of theatrical performance, history, theory, and practice, and your ability to work collaboratively in the creation and staging of work. The four-year full-time programme includes a sandwich placement year and a year abroad, giving you professional experience in a creative or theatrical context and the opportunity to engage with writing and drama in an international setting. The degree also includes a foundation year, providing additional preparation for students whose prior qualifications need to be developed before the main programme begins. Graduates pursue careers in writing, theatre and performance, arts administration, education, community arts, broadcasting, journalism, publishing, and a wide range of creative and cultural roles. Many develop portfolio careers combining several of these activities. Postgraduate study in creative writing, drama, or education is also a natural route.
