BMus Creative Music Technology
About this course
Creative music technology brings together musical creativity and the digital tools that have transformed how music is composed, produced, performed and distributed. It is a discipline concerned with using technology not as a replacement for musical skill but as an extension of it, developing practitioners who can generate original musical ideas and realise them with technical sophistication across a wide range of digital and electronic tools. From electronic music composition and studio production to sound design, live performance technology and interactive installations, the field encompasses a broad and rapidly evolving set of practices. At the University of Surrey, which has a strong reputation in music and sound technology, this three-year programme integrates AI and digital skills throughout the curriculum, as the university's own description notes, building the digital confidence and creativity that employers value in contemporary creative and technology roles. You will develop your compositional and creative practice alongside skills in music production and digital audio workstations, synthesis and sound design, mixing, audio coding, and the use of interactive and AI tools in musical creation. The degree develops both the creative and technical dimensions of music technology practice, recognising that neither alone is sufficient for a professional career in the field. Surrey's connections with the music industry and its location near London provide direct access to the professional world that the degree prepares you for. Graduates go on to careers in music production, sound design for film, television and games, live sound engineering, music technology education, interactive media, music software development and the broader audio industry. Further study in music technology, audio engineering, sonic arts or related areas is also a well-established route.
