BA Counselling, Mental Health and Wellbeing
About this course
Counselling, mental health, and wellbeing have moved from the margins to the centre of public conversation over the past two decades, and the demand for skilled practitioners who can support people through emotional and psychological difficulty has never been greater. This is a field that asks you to develop both a sophisticated theoretical understanding of the mind and behaviour and the interpersonal skills to listen, reflect, and respond in ways that genuinely help. It is demanding, deeply human work, and a degree in this area prepares you for it with both knowledge and practice. At Birmingham Newman University, this three-year full-time programme is designed for students who are passionate about supporting others and who want to understand how therapeutic practice can make a difference in people's lives. You will engage with theories of counselling and psychotherapy, the psychology of mental health and wellbeing, the ethical frameworks that govern therapeutic practice, and the social and systemic factors that affect mental health at a population level. You will also develop practical skills in listening, reflection, communication, and the core conditions of effective therapeutic relationships. The programme places emphasis on your own self-awareness and professional development as a practitioner, recognising that the quality of the therapeutic relationship is central to effective support. Graduates from this programme go on to work in counselling, mental health support, community wellbeing services, schools and colleges, the NHS, the charity sector, and social care. Many pursue further professional training to become accredited counsellors or therapists, and postgraduate study in counselling, psychotherapy, or clinical psychology is a common next step. The combination of theoretical understanding and relational skills the degree develops is also valued in education, social work, human resources, and any field where supporting people's wellbeing is part of the role.
