About this course

Contemporary history and politics focuses on the period from the nineteenth century to the present, examining the events, movements, ideologies and decisions that made the modern world and that continue to shape political life today. The pairing is natural: history provides the archive of how political decisions played out in the past; politics provides the frameworks for understanding how power, institutions and ideas operate. Together they produce graduates who can read the present through the lens of the past and make sense of political complexity without collapsing it into simple narratives. At the University of Salford you will explore the events that changed the world across the nineteenth, twentieth and twenty-first centuries, examining the politics that shaped key decisions and transitions: wars and their causes and consequences, revolutions and their aftermath, decolonisation, the Cold War, economic crises, and the contemporary challenges of globalisation, populism and environmental politics. The three-year programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study political history in an international context and encounter different national perspectives on shared events. You will develop skills in historical research, source analysis, political argument and written communication. Graduates of contemporary history and politics are well prepared for careers in the civil service and public administration, journalism and broadcasting, political communications and research, think tanks and policy organisations, the diplomatic service, education, heritage and archives, and the charitable and voluntary sector. The analytical and communication skills the degree develops are valued wherever complex information needs to be understood and communicated clearly. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in history, politics, international relations, law, journalism, or public policy, deepening their expertise in preparation for specialist careers. The combination of historical depth and political analysis provides a genuinely rigorous foundation for engaging with the world as it is.
